This course will cover the notice of deficiency, notice of determination, and the various courts where a taxpayer can challenge the IRS. Being able to advise a client as to the client's options in dealing with the IRS is an important part of any tax practice. This course will explain in detail a notice of deficiency and notice of determination and how to protect a taxpayer's rights when one of these is received. The three forums in which a taxpayer can litigate with the IRS will be covered so the participants will be able to explain these forums to their clients. This course is approved by the IRS. The submission of a completed request form, found under the materials tab, is required for credit.

Larry Jones, JD, advises and represents clients in IRS tax controversies which include audits, appeals, collections, criminal tax investigations, and civil and criminal tax litigation. In addition to his private practice, Larry is Director of the Federal Taxpayers Clinic and Small Business Clinic at the SMU Dedman School of Law and teaches Federal Tax Procedure and Taxation of Property Dispositions at the Law School. Larry and his partner, Jack Townsend, are listed in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business, and have been selected as Texas Super Lawyers. Larry is a teacher, author, and recognized public speaker and authority on tax controversy matters, and how to effectively deal with the IRS. Larry has developed, written, and taught courses for various professional organizations involving all aspects of the IRS including but not limited to audits, appeals, collections, and negotiating with the IRS. Larry is a member of the Advisory Board of the Journal of Tax Practice and Procedure published by CCH, and writes a column on examination issues for this publication. Larry has published various articles on dealing with the IRS. He has been a co-author of Guide to Dealing with the IRS published by Practitioners Publishing Company.
